Genuine Windows Vista
(We do not see Microsoft’s Genuine Windows Vista policy
being an issue for businesses, but businesses should be
aware of the policy).
Built into Windows Vista is the
new Software Protection Platform, which detects non-genuine
versions of software and disables valuable enhanced
features.
“If activation fails, the system will go into a
“non-genuine” state and the customer will have 30-days to
activate with a valid product key or other Volume Activation
methods. At the end of the 30-day period, if the user fails
to activate, the system will be put into reduced
functionality. Windows Vista has the ability to detect
non-genuine systems on an on-going basis. Windows Vista
users must pass Microsoft genuine validation requirements
when attempting to obtain non-security updates and other
downloads from Microsoft. If a system is determined to be
non-genuine, key features will be disabled and the operating
system will go into reduced functionality.” (Microsoft)
What
is
Reduced
Functionality?
-
Reduced PC functionality --No
desktop, No start menu or task bar
-
New
features disabled
-
Default web browser limited to 1 hour periods
-
Non-security updates and downloads denied
What
is Activation?
Activation is not new and most businesses have been activating
software for years. For clarification
“software (Vista, Office 2007) bought "off the
shelf" or on new PCs sold by OEMs (Dell, HP) requires
activation. However, the OEM may activate the software at
the factory before delivery to the end user (business).
Once activation is completed, most users will never have to
activate their installation again. A unique Product Key is
required for each installation. ” (Microsoft)
What is
Validation?
Validation may be required periodically to obtain downloads and
updates. It is a quick, easy, and confidential online
process that enables Microsoft to verify that you own the
software (Vista, Office 2007). Once validated as genuine,
access to downloads, updates, and add-ins is possible. For
those that are concerned, during the validation process.

Office 2003 Availability Update
“After
June 30, 2007, OEM Microsoft Office 2003 will no longer be
available from Microsoft.”
What is OEM?
OEM
stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.
Companies such as Dell and HP that build the equipment
(workstations, servers, etc) purchase the software products
in bulk at lower cost and load the software onto the
equipment. The product itself is essentially the same as the
full version retail-packaged. The OEM negative is the
software remains with the equipment and is not transferable
to replacement equipment.
What does this mean?
If you are looking to purchase a new workstation from an OEM
vendor (e.g. Dell, HP), there is a very good chance you will
not be able to purchase an OEM version of Office 2003 after
June 30, 2007. After June 30, 2007, OEM vendor’s will
continue to provide Office 2003 if they still have
inventory. Once inventory is depleted, the software will
not be available from the OEM.
Does this mean Office 2003 is not available for purchase?
No, it is still possible to purchase a full-version retail
license from authorized suppliers. |
